2008 saw Lil Wayne take a step closer to super stardom—or super infamy—with the release of Tha Carter III. The critically acclaimed album, fueled by its lead single, “Lollipop” pushed Wayne further into the public eye.
With the Grammy’s looming, the Cash Money Millionaire sat down with Katie Couric to discuss Hurricane Katrina and a variety of other topics.
One of the things Wayne ultimately sounds off about is the lack of contact he has with his biological father. Couric asks the rapper why he dropped the “D” from his real name and probably got more than she bargained for with the response.
“I dropped the D because I’m a Jr.,”Wayne explained to the CBS anchor. “My father is living and he’s not in my life. He’s never been in my life. I don’t want to be ‘Dwayne’, I’d rather be ‘Wayne’.”

Couric then asked Wayne if his father knows that.
“He knows now.”
