Missy Elliott has been catching some flack from a few of Nicki Minaj‘s fans after asking what seemed like an innocent question.
On Wednesday (August 24), Missy took to Twitter to ask her followers what they thought the difference between a “hit” and “classic” is.
“I have a question…Is there a difference between A Hit & A Classic record or no?” she tweeted. “And if so what is this difference?”
Missy’s tweet came two days after Nicki Minaj made chart history with her new Billboard No.1 “Super Freaky Girl,” and although the Supa Dupa Fly rapper didn’t mention Nicki or even allude to her achievement, the Young Money rapper’s fans took it as a diss.
“Missy Elliott always have something to say surrounding Nicki Minaj indirectly,” one fan wrote. “I see her dirty spirit. It’s been like that for years. Give it up mama.”
A second wrote: “Missy so miserable and messy bitch don’t let me get started these old bitches really mad and miserable go pay ya rent and stay in ya bum ass place these old and new school bitches make me sick!!! Nicki can’t win from either generation of female rappers.”

One Barb took aim at Missy’s chart history, calling her out for having never topped the Billboard chart as a solo artist, while another suggested she ask Atlantic Records to buy her a hit “like they did for Cardi.”
“Ohhhh, a biyatch wants to be messy,” the Nicki fan wrote. “A Hit is what you have YET to have. ‘Super Freaky Girl’ by Nicki Minaj is A Hit. Classics are ‘Moment 4 Life’, ‘Only’, ‘Itty Bitty Piggy’, etc. You signed by Atlantic, right Messy Missy? Tell them to buy you a hit like they did for Cardi.
A number of Missy Elliott fans ran to the VA artist’s aid, snapping back at the Barbz. “Missy elliott has never had a beef in her entire career but nicki minaj stand are desperate for a problem,” one Twitter user wrote. “Firstly missy Elliot is quite literally ur favs fav, actually ur favs founder.”
“I firmly believe that without Nicki Minaj, there would be no Cardi. But I also believe that without Missy Elliott there would be no Nicki,” another fan tweeted. “Idk why people just can’t be happy we’re witnessing greatness. Why pick a side? It’s weird.”

A third fan could not believe the slander coming from the Barbz. “Nicki Minaj’s depraved fanbase coming for Missy Elliott? …….THEE Missy Misdemeanor Elliott?” they tweeted. “What did Minaj say on those records that made these people as weird as they are? I’d really like to know. Missy did nothing wrong at all. It was a good question.”
A few of Nicki’s fans claimed Missy doesn’t have any hits, which caused one Missy fan to snap back: “Saying Missy Elliott doesn’t have any hits or classics is proof that just because you stan Nicki Minaj does not mean you know hip hop.”
After Missy Elliott’s question was taken out of context, the four-time Grammy winner clarified her original tweet and responded to the hateful responses.
“I love so many of yall answers,” she tweeted. “This was a back & forth with my producer friends over music. Is there a difference between Classics & hits & he said it’s more preference. So y’all helped.
She concluded: “A few chose 2 be hurtful but understand this came from a positive place.”

It was only a few weeks ago that Nicki Minaj praised Missy and credited her with kicking down the door that led to her being announced as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient at the forthcoming MTV VMAs.
Missy congratulated Nicki on the achievement, to which Nicki replied: “Mumbling & cackling??? nah omg thank you Missy. You kicked down this [door]. Nothing but Love & Respect for your iconic artistry. #VMAs #NickiVmas #VideoVanguard.”
Missy Elliott was honored with the Video Vanguard Award in 2019, becoming the first female rapper to achieve this feat. As Nicki noted, her creative vision behind classic videos such as “Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Work It” has made her an icon.
Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj and her husband Kenneth “Zoo” Petty are still dealing with the aftermath of his 1995 first-degree attempted rape conviction.
On Wednesday (August 24), a video of victim Jennifer Hough saying she “made a mistake” in regard to pressing charges against Petty surfaced online. But her attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, is disputing the validity of the clip.

“This heavily edited video conversation with Jennifer and Black (the same man that threatened her life on IG live) does not deserve a comment,” Blackburn told Radar Online. “Ask that rapist to explain the transcript from his plea hearing where he admitted to attempting to rape Jennifer with a knife at his grandmother’s house.
“Not only do we have the plea hearing transcript, we are in the process of getting over 200 pieces of evidence and video from the 1994/95 rape case. Stay tuned.”
