After being sentenced to eight years in prison and having her marriage to Papoose called off due to security issues, things are getting even worse for Remy Ma. On Monday (June 23) the jailed rapper was hit with a $10 million lawsuit by, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, the woman she was accused of shooting last July.
In the Bronx Supreme Court, Barnes-Joseph claimed her life has been ruined as a result of the shooting. Lauren Raysor, who serves as Barnes-Joseph‘s attorney, cited physical pain and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder as additional reasons for the suit. Remy (real name, Reminisce Smith) will continue serving the rest of her eight year sentence at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, unless her legal team can win at least one of the many appeals filed on her behalf.
In other news, Mos Def will grace the stage at New York’s JVC Jazz Festival with the self-proclaimed “Godfather of Hip Hop,” Gil Scott-Heron. The pair will perform together on June 28 as part of the Mos Def Big Band during a set at Carnegie Hall. The recently paroled Scott-Heron‘s music has been sampled and appropriated by Kanye West, Common, KRS-One, and others, but he has not mentioned recording any new material. In addition to playing some spot dates, Gil has hopes of finishing The Last Holiday, a book chronicling he and Stevie Wonder‘s mission to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr‘s birthday a federal holiday.

“He’s one of my heroes, an incredible source of energy, power, and truth in the world,” Mos Def said of Scott-Heron in New York magazine. “It’s an honor to be able to finally work with him this closely.”
