One member of the Jena 6 found himself on the other side of the law Wednesday after an incident with a student at a Texas high school.
Bryant Purvis, 19, was charged with one count of assault causing bodily injury after choking a student who allegedly vandalized his car the day before. Purvis was booked and released from the Denton County Jail in Dallas early Thursday morning after posting $1,000 bail.
The altercation was not connected to the incident in Jena, Lousiana, nor was it part of any on going tension between Purvis and the other student.
“This is simply an altercation that occurred between two students,” said Carrollton police Sgt. John Singleton.
Unlike the case that put Purvis in the national spotlight, there is unlikely to be a massive Internet protest or rally in Dallas. In a written statement to police, Purvis admitted to the accusations.
“I walked over to him and grabbed him by his neck,”Purvis wrote in the affidavit, “then told him not to mess with my car anymore, then I left.”
According to Sgt. Singleton, the alleged vandalism of Purvis’ vehicle was not previously reported.
“That was info that came to light after the assault had occurred,” he told The Dallas Morning News. “Once we became aware of it, we contacted Mr. Purvis and took a report on that offense. The case is still under investigation.”
Purvis’ mother, Tina Jones, is “very upset” about the situation and released a short statement after the news of her son’s arrest hit the press.
“We are really, really going through a lot already with the Jena Six. I wish this had never happened. But it is what it is, and now we have to deal with it.”
Purvis and five other teens made national headlines after the beating of a white high school student in Jena, Louisiana landed them attempted murder charges. The first student to go to trial in the case, Mychal Bell, cut a deal with the prosecutors. Purvis and the other teens are awaiting trial.
At last year’s BET Awards, Purvis and another member of the Jena 6, Carwin Jones, presented an award at the show and gave shout outs to all of the people who supported the group. The incident drew mixed reactions from media critics.
