Downtown Recordings, home to Mos Def, Gnarls Barkley and Kid Sister, has partnered with Virgin AirlinesAmerica, Puma and Nikon to launch free, sponsor-supported MP3’s via Rcrdlbl.com. In addition to providing fans access to music from the above artists without the danger of illegal downloads, the site offers access to independent artist from such labels as Dim Mak Records, Warp Records and others.
The free site may become especially popular in the coming months, since a second Gnarls Barkley album is expected for a fourth quarter release. Downtown’s chairman and CEO Josh Deutsch also reports that Mos Def is in the studio working on a new album. The Brooklyn-based rapper/actor moved to Downtown Recordings in October, and Deutsch also reports that Kanye West will provide production on some of the album’s tracks. In the meantime, a remix of the Justice song “D.A.N.C.E.” featuring Mos Def and Spank Rock is available for free download HERE.
