In the five days since the death of Kanye West’s mother Dr. Donda West, more information about the practicing surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams continues to emerge. The Los Angeles Times reports that the L.A. County coroner launched an investigation of Adams yesterday (Nov. 13). The investigation began after a preliminary autopsy of West concluded that the 58-year-old educator and manager of her son died “as a result of surgery or anesthesia.”
Adams has at least two malpractice settlements on his medical records and has also been involved in previous lawsuits with other cases. For the full Times report, including a PDF of the formal complaint, click HERE.
In addition to the malpractice accusations, both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Daily News note that Adams has two convictions for drunken driving, one in September of 2002 and another in March of 2006 (booking photo pictured below). Both reports come after yesterday’s news of Adams’ various other legal troubles. The Daily News story (which is available HERE) goes on to quote Bonita Hovey, a former patient of Adams. Hovey also has a lawsuit pending against Adams, and trial is reportedly scheduled for March of 2008. Adams released an official statement regarding the matter of Dr. West’s untimely death.
“I first want to express my deepest condolences to the West family at a very difficult time,” said Adams. “Out of respect for the West family and in the absence of other verifiable information, any comment from me without first discussing that information with the family would be unprofessional.”
