The war of words between Mississippi emcee David Banner and Rev. Al Sharpton seems to be coming to a close.
Sharpton has not responded to Banner directly, but offered this statement in response to a political cartoon that appeared in Friday’s Florida Times-Union newspaper:
“In our fight throughout the history of the National Action Network we have never been silenced by apologists for racism, police brutality and government neglect, nor will we be silenced now by some buck dancing rapping Uncle Toms that try to divert our fight with their masters to them.”
While Sharpton never mentions Banner by name, Banner is the latest in a string of emcees to criticize Sharpton’s latest campaign to eradicate “nigga”, “bitch”, and “ho” from Hip Hop’s vocabulary.
“Our fight is not with some paid self-hate promoters, our fight is with the companies that uphold a standard that will not allow gays, Jews or police to be disparaged in music but will allow our women to be disparaged,”Sharpton said, reinforcing his point.

Last week, Banner issued a fiery open letter aimed at Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Oprah and other black leaders. He accused those named in the letter of talking “at” the youth of America, instead of talking “to” them.
With Sharpton’s latest response, Banner might be right.
