Atlanta, GA

As the city of Atlanta inches closer to marijuana decriminalization, the Hip Hop community has found itself on cloud nine following a decision to lighten the penalties for marijuana possession.

On Monday (October 2), the Atlanta City Council passed a new legislation reducing the consequences of being caught with a small amount of cannabis. Rather than a $1,000 fine for possessing an ounce or less of marijuana, offenders will instead pay $75 and also avoid jail time, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

While sharing the news on Instagram, Atlanta super rapper 2 Chainz pointed out that the legislation “will save so many young people from bullshit charges that later haunt them.”

Celebrated MC and outspoken political activist Killer Mike expressed his gratitude to all those involved with the recent legislation.

“Y’all have shown ya self to be Progressive and I further challenge y’all to push the progressive line as city council members and Any post ya hold,” the Run The Jewels rapper wrote. “Bravo. Big Boi and journalist Shaun King also doted on the news via social media.

As of Tuesday (October 3), the legislation still needs to be approved by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, but his recent tweet seemed to seal the deal.

“Thank you to @KwanzaHall & @KeishaBottoms for your leadership on marijuana reform. I look forward to reviewing & signing this legislation,” Mayor Reed tweeted on Monday (October 2).
