Lovelock, NV

O.J. Simpson could be a free man as soon as October 1.

A group of four Nevada parole commissioners all voted for the former NFL star’s release after he served almost nine years in prison for charges stemming from a 2007 Las Vegas robbery. Simpson appeared remotely via video conference from the Lovelock Correctional Facility in Nevada for the hearing.

Simpson, 70, delivered an account of the case to the parole board early Thursday (July 20) and was adamant he didn’t intend to steal. He said he wished “this would have never happened,” according to ABC News.

During the robbery, Simpson and a group of men went into a hotel and casino and stole sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He claimed the memorabilia and other personal items originally belonged to him.

“The only thing I saw that was on display that wasn’t mine was some baseballs, and I made it clear to everybody those are not mine,” he said during the hearing. “All I want is my property … I wasn’t there to steal from anybody.”

Simpson’s original sentence was up to 33 years. He will have to adhere to several conditions while on parole.

The Hip Hop community came out in droves on Twitter to express their reactions to his hearing and impending release, including 9th Wonder, Questlove,Chuck D, and Top Dawg Entertainment’s Terrence “Punch” Henderson.
