Desiigner’s “Timmy Turner” verse for XXL’s 2016 Freshman freestyle was a departure from the norm for several reasons. Firstly, the video showcase is usually a platform for up-and-coming MCs to show off their lyrical prowess, but the 19-year-old instead traded in his (often indecipherable) rapping for some (mostly indecipherable) singing. Secondly, Desiigner showed an eerie calmness in the clip, all snapping fingers and stares rather than his usual excited flailing limbs.

The freestyle video became the most-viewed of this year’s Freshman drops by a wide margin, netting 7.4 million views on YouTube and causing a stir online as viewers tried to decide whether to share it using the flame emoji or the trash emoji.

He’s now shared the cover art for the official version of the song, writing in the caption that the release is “steps away.”

Since the release of the first video, countless versions of the song have appeared, including three from Desiigner himself. First was the original freestyle, then a preview of a full track produced by Kanye West collaborator Mike Dean. Now, Desiigner and Dean have teamed up again on a piano-based version of the song.

The “Panda” rapper shared a clip to his Instagram of the two performing the track on Tuesday (July 19) with the caption “HE IS ALMOST HERE.”

The full song was actually promised a few days ago, so we can probably expect it any time now. The announcement came as part of the promotion for his forthcoming Life of Desiigner album.

Dean also shared a few shots to IG yesterday, showing time in the studio with fellow G.O.O.D. Music signee Travis Scott.
