All eyes in the hip hop world were on Kanye West yesterday, as the Grammy awards began last night. Would Ye take home album of the year? The answer was no, but The College Dropout didn’t leave empty handed.

Kanye walked out with his hands full, earning awards for Best Rap Solo Performance for the Jamie Foxx assisted Gold Digger, Best Rap Song for Diamonds and Late Registration picked up Best Rap Album.

G.O.O.D. Music, West’s label struck gold as well. John Legend picked up the Best New Artist award as well as Best R&B Album.

Rock band U2 bested Kanye and others, earning the Album of the Year nod for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, but the group also had words of encouragement for West.

When the group accepted their award, they told West, ”next year, it’s yours.”

Mariah Carey, 2005’s comeback artist, was also nominated for Album of the Year. Carey picked up three awards that night and seemed happy to just be in the building. This was her first Grammy win in more than a decade.

“We have to go through certain things in order to appreciate life and learn lessons,”Carey told Brian McKnight.
