With the speed that the rap game changes, it’s easy to forget about groups who don’t consistently put out material. However, The Fugees have managed to stick around after releasing only one album in the last decade (The Score)
The groups biggest star, Lauryn Hill recently opened up to Essence magazine about why she left the game and what she did during her time off.
“I discovered people could only acknowledge red and blue and I was somewhere between. I was purple,” she said of her relationship with the industry. “And when I can’t be whole, I have a problem. I was like, ‘I’ve got to get out of here.’”
During her self imposed sabbatical, Hill says she cut off all social interaction including music and television. “It was a very introspective and complicated time because I had to really confront my fears,” she says of the experience.

She began to explore some other talents, and began writing screen plays in addition to new music. Hill also tried her had at clothing design but scrapped the idea after feeling that others would exploit her designs.
“Fashion is something I breathe,”Hill explains. “I wasn’t really trying to share my style, I was just trying to be me and exist.”
Fans celebrated earlier this year after Hill reunited with Wyclef and Pras and began working on new Fugees material, but every member of the group wasn’t initially thrilled about the reunion.
Pras initially held out until Clef was able to convince him that the comeback would be “worthwhile”.

“Lauryn Hill called Wyclef and then he called me,”Pras tells London magazine Time Out. “At first I said no, it was one of those things where you’ve kind of moved on. Then he came and spoke to me and I was like, alright, let’s see what happens. We’re all good now but you’ve still got three different individuals and three egos.”
There has been no word on the release of a new Fugees album to date.
