A teacher at Chestnut Grove Elementary School in Decatur, Alabama has apologized after a picture of him in blackface went viral.
WREG Memphis reports that the teacher, Heath Morrow stated that he had an “error in judgement” when he chose to dress up as rapper Kanye West in blackface.
The picture that went viral features both Morrow and his wife. Morrow is seen in blackface wearing shutter shades while holding a sign that reads, “Kanye for Prez 2020.”
According to Raw Story, Morrow’s wife, who is assumed to be dressed up as Kim Kardashian in the photo, posted the picture on Facebook, and left the following comment: “Haha some people thought Heath was really a black man.”

In his apology letter, Morrow explained that he has “never seen color” in his life, and instead sees people “for who they are.”
“My intentions were not malicious or directed toward any certain group of people,” Morrow wrote in his letter, according to WREG. “I would also like to say that everyone who knows my character and knows my heart, knows that I have never seen color in my life. I wasn’t raised or taught that way and do not raise my children that way. I see people for who they are, and my wife and I go out of our way to help anyone we can in my profession as an educator.”
A similar incident happened several weeks ago at a fraternity party at UCLA. During the “Kanye Western” party, members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the Alpha Phi sorority dressed up in blackface by smudging black makeup on their faces.
The university is reportedly investigating the matter.
