Jada Pinkett Smith appeared on the Howard Stern Show and detailed her relationship with Tupac. She says that time has given her a better perspective of their friendship.
“Being older, I have more of an understanding of what that was between us,” the actress says, “because when you have two young people that have very strong feelings, but there is no physical chemistry between us at all. And it wasn’t even just for me. It was him, too. There was a time when I was like, ‘Just kiss me. Let’s just see how this goes.’ And when I tell you it had to be the most disgusting kiss for us both.”
She says that a romantic relationship between them was just not meant to be.
“The only way I can put it is just the higher power did not want that,” Smith continues. “If ‘Pac and I had any kind of sexual chemistry, we might have killed each other because we were both so passionate and you know, we loved deeply. It was hard enough with us just being friends. We had a very volatile relationship.”

She describes an intense conversation she had with the late rapper after he had gotten out of prison, but says she saw hope for his turnaround toward the end of his life.
“I wasn’t in agreement with the direction he was taking and I just told him that it was a destructive direction, a very scary direction,” she says. “He felt as though I had changed. I’d gone Hollywood. I’d gone soft and I understood all of that. Looking back now, I totally understand where ‘Pac was ’cause at that particular point in time, that mentality was part of his survival for that moment and it was actually a mentality he started to come out of before he was murdered.”
Despite the sentiment that many people have that Tupac was gone too soon, Smith says his job is complete.
“It was really tragic,” she says of his death. “But you know what, he left a very strong and powerful mark. I mean, people are still inspired by him. So he did his work. He did his work and that’s what I’m happy about.”
