The label that brought you Black Star, Skillz and Sound Bombing is set to make its return to the rap game in 2006. That’s right, Rawkus Records is back, with a new deal and new aspirations. In addition to the label, which will be housed under RED/Sony/BMG, there are also plans for several imprints to be handled by Rawkus.
Along with Rawkus Management which will be headed by label co-founders Brian Brater and Jarret Myer, the pair will also manage West Coast producer Jack Splash and Plant Life, who will run the Easy League imprint. Also joining the fold will be producer Sa-Ra (Common, Goapele, Kanye West¹s G.O.O.D. Music/Columbia), with the SCRP label.
“We are thrilled to work with Brian and Jarret as they re -create the Rawkus Records brand at RED Distribution, emphasized RED Executive Vice President and General Manager, Bob Morelli. “Their vision and passion for everything they do will be right at home with us. RED is committed to its urban music roster and Rawkus will be a major part of this commitment in 2006 and beyond.”
No releases have been planned for the new year but Brater wants fans to “expect an extremely active 2006 release schedule.”
