The making of Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, To Pimp A Butterfly is discussed in Revolt’s latest documentary, “Entering the Cocoon: The Making Of To Pimp A Butterfly.”
Three of the producers credited on the album, Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Tae Beast and TPAB’s engineer Mixed by Ali share insight on the studio sessions with Kendrick and how the tracks were crafted.
K. Dot’s visit to Africa seems to have set the tone for the album.
“When he went to Africa, he came back a whole different person,” Terrace Martin says. “I think that’s kind of when we all kicked it into full gear, ’cause his eyes got a little wider to life, and what’s going on over there.”

“I could hear the tone in his voice and something was inspiring him,” Sounwave recalls. “It actually just changed his whole turn in life. That was a big step for him to take that trip.”
The studio session for “u” was “touching” for everyone who witnessed Kendrick recording in the studio.
“He just walked in and turned all the lights off and walked into the booh,” Mixed By Ali recalls. “He literally didn’t come out for three hours. It was an experience. It touched us all.
“Everybody who walked in to that session had tears in their eyes,” Sounwave adds. “He put his heart into that record.”
