Just shy of the 20th anniversary of their biggest hit ever, Oakland Hip Hop duo Luniz has just announced a new album set for release on April 20.
In 1995 Da Luniz, consisting of rappers Yukmouth and Numskull, released their hit single “I Got 5 On It” and later offered fans a remix featuring the likes of fellow Oakland rappers E-40, Dru Down, Shock G, and more.
The group’s new album, tentatively titled High Timez, will be offered in an abbreviated mixtape format as well as a full retail album.
“The High Timez is a 4/20 album, it ain’t a mixtape,” Yukmouth said during a recent appearance on the Murder Master Music Show. “We gon’ give half of it out as a mixtape on Datpiff. We gon’ give them eight songs but it’s gonna be a total of 16 songs, with skits and shit probably like 22, 23 joints on the whole iTunes release. We in a day and age where you gotta give something free for the fans to even fuck with you. It’s a celebration of us coming back [after not] putting shit out for 15 years. We thought, ‘Why not give the fans something free?’ Let’em come back and spin with us and get the whole album.”

The other half of the duo, Numskull, added on.
“It’s one good album,” he said. “It’s what they been waiting for. They been waiting for the Luniz and I think we’re giving them exactly what they want. Everybody out here getting high. Why wouldn’t we give’em songs that’s talking about getting high?”
Asked to compare the new release to their previous music Numskull said “it doesn’t compare at all.”
“It’s a whole different album,” he said. “I mean, you gonna hear the funny Luniz, you gonna hear the street Luniz, you gonna hear the getting high Luniz. The album is so put together right. Me and Yuk came together and just acted a fool on this. It’s a good album, it’s a great album.”

With features from B Real, B Legit, Ras Kass, Dru Down, and more on the record, Numskull said he was motivated to release new music after listening to the current landscape of the industry upon returning home from prison.
“I came home from prison and I’m listening to this weak-ass shit, I’m like, ‘Oh no, we gotta get on real quick,'” he said.
Yukmouth offered an even more scathing criticism of modern Hip Hop.
“Right now niggas ain’t got no identity,” he said. “You don’t know where a nigga from. It’s New York niggas rapping on down-South beats. You got down-South niggas rapping on Bay Area beats. Nobody even screaming what hood they from, what neighborhood, you don’t know their history. It’s just a bunch of club shit and bullshit so it’s definitely the time for us to bring the real back. It’s right on time, I think.”
