Troy Avetook to Twitter to claim that he is the first Brooklyn rapper to talk about drugs in his raps.
“Ist nigga outta Brooklyn NYC talkin HEAVY drug talk in his raps…..” Troy Ave says to start off a series of tweets. “think about it! MY STORY CONSISTENT (the truth usually is)…*correction I AM DAT NIGGA! & I wanna b WEALTHY SO BAD! u”
These claims were quickly commented on by social media critics who suggested that earlier rappers from Brooklyn, such as Jay Z and The Notorious B.I.G., have rapped extensively about drugs before Troy Ave.
In “Brooklyn’s Finest,” the third track of Jay Z’s 1996 album, Reasonable Doubt, Jay and Biggie trade bars about their hard Brooklyn roots.

“From ‘9-6, the only MC with a flu / Yeah I rhyme sick, I be what you’re trying to do / Made a fortune off Peru, extradite, china white heron / Nigga please, like the short sleeves I bear arms / Stay out of my way from here on.”
The references to “Peru, extradite, china white heron” is descriptive of an international drug deal.
Troy Ave, who recently told HipHopDX his “music is like heroine,” did not back down from his claims. Instead, he posted an Instagram rebuttal to the haters.
“BEEN TALKIN THAT DOPE BOY $HiT out the Gate! My story been consistent …. Others touch on it and mix it up with street shit like, robberies, killings, clubs, struggle life …. In January, Troy Ave discussed why he should be considered the top of the Hip Hop game. He also criticized the appeal of Chance The Rapper for his druggy image.
“The game is twisted and fucked up,” Troy Ave said at the time. “How is a drug addict gonna be at the forefront of rap?”
