In a clip that debuted as a part of today’s (September 8) DX Daily, Charlamagne Tha God explained his contributions to HipHopDX as a blogger after being let go from Philadelphia’s 100.3 The Beat radio station in 2009.
“I used to blog for HipHopDX,” Charlamagne said. “I used to love it ‘cause I’m the type of person, I gotta get these thoughts out of my head, so they provided me an outlet at a time when I didn’t have a lot of outlets so I really appreciate that. One thing you gotta understand about life is that it goes on with or without you. So you either gonna sit around and be upset and disappointed that you were fired or you’re gonna keep it moving. I’m the type of person, I keep it moving. I never say to myself, ‘Oh, I got fired.’ When they call you into the office they say to you, ‘Hey, we’re moving in another direction.’ I look at it as it’s not them moving me in another direction it’s God moving me another direction ‘cause everytime I get let go from a situation I end up in a better situation. So, it is what it is.”
In a retrospective interview posted last month, former HipHopDX Editor-in-Chief Andreas Hale detailed his own memory of the current Breakfast Club co-host’s work for the site.
“Charlamagne was interesting because he was working with Wendy Williams and I think he had just left Philly radio for whatever happened with that Beanie Sigel interview,” Hale said. “He had emailed me randomly like, ‘Yo, do you need any writers?’ And I was like, ‘Sure.’ He asked to start doing interviews and I was like, ‘Nope. I want you to speak your mind.’ Same thing. That’s just how these things worked out. I would screen all the bloggers and see what they were writing about to see if they were on point and not just being malicious for no reason, but that’s just how that started because I like writers with a voice. You can be as technically sound as possible, but that’s my job as an editor—to make sure your shit looks good. For you, I want you to have a voice so people can recognize who you are through your writing. Guys like Meka and [Charlamagne] and Ketchums and Amanda Bassa—they nailed it.”
