Though Maino has eschewed the television cameras, the same cannot be said about his son’s mother, Zakia Baum.
Baum starred in the short-lived reality show “Starter Wives Confidential,” which the rapper was asked about in an interview on VladTV. “I thought it was funny,” Maino said. “I thought it was comedic. But no, I wasn’t bothered. Look, I’m easy. People have the right to do whatever they want to do with their lives. I’m not responsible for a grown person making decisions to do whatever they want to do. If that’s what you want to pursue, if that’s something you want to do, then it’s all good. God bless you. Hope it works out.”
Maino continued, reaffirming that Baum’s decision to be on the show did not upset him. “Nah, I’m not bothered, because none of my real personal business was put out there. I wasn’t bothered by it. Not one bit. I watched it and enjoyed it, actually.”
The Brooklyn rapper wouldn’t comment on whether the portrayal of Baum on the show was an accurate reflection of her. “I don’t want to talk about my son’s mother, but she is who she is,” Maino said. “Haven’t been together in many years, but there’s a respect. That’s my son mother. I’m not gonna say things… I’ve said things in the past that maybe I shouldn’t have said that’s looked at as disrespect, but that’s my son mother. Like, he gotta see that… So I try to stay away from saying disrespectful things about his mother, or anything negative.”
Many rappers have become involved with reality television, such as T.I. on “The Family Hustle,” and Lil Scrappy, Joe Budden, Saigon, and others on “Love & Hip Hop.”
