Ma$e’s history with Bad Boy records is a complex one. Ma$e signed with Bad Boy records in 1996 and released his debut Harlem World to multiplatinum success; however, the rapper “retired” for religious reasons prior to the release of his sophomore album, Double Up. Afterwards came comebacks and subsequent retirements.
Recently adding to the mystique that has been Ma$e’s career was D-Dot, renowned producer and member of The Hitmen. D-Dot, who was serving as head of A&R and Vice-President of the label, spoke on the first time he met Ma$e, during Cipha Sounds’ “Take It Personal” Improv Show earlier this week.
“Puff Daddy signed this guy from Harlem,” recalled the producer. “I was thoroughly impressed with his demo. His name was Murda Mase. So everything was, ‘Shoot ’em up, bang!’ …You know, all of that. It was the ’90s, so I was like, ‘Yes, this is hot!'”
D-Dot recalled that Ma$e wouldn’t even shake is hand. “I walk into the studio, and I congratulate him, and I’m puttin’ my hand out, and he hits me with the [mumbling] ‘I just wanna make some money, you know what I’m sayin’.”

D-Dot remained unfazed, despite Ma$e’s attitude. “I was like, ‘Alright, cool, make some money, I got some hit records for you, the Hitmen, we gon’ do this shit up.'”
“He was like, ‘Yeah, but I need privacy. I do my shit all by my lonely in the studio.’ I was like, ‘You know, unfortunately, I gotta be here with you, ’cause I work for the guy who I gotta answer to, and I can’t just let you…,’ and he was like, ‘Alright, if you gotta be here, but over there, just sit in the corner.’ I’m VP, mind you.”
The Hitman took it in stride. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll go sit in the corner.’ …I’m sitting way in the corner, he’s got his Harlem guys, and every record that comes on, they gotta dance to it…”
“That’s pretty much the bad attitude story I have,” concluded D-Dot. “We ended up selling, you know, [millions] of records, so it ended up doing real well.”
