This week, Tech N9ne spoke with HipHopDX about the perception that his brand of music doesn’t reach black fans. Meanwhile, Scarface said that the decision-making power in music labels has been taken away from the black community. Finally, Nicki Minaj hopes someone can help save Gucci Mane from himself.
Tech N9ne Says There Is A “Big” Disconnect Between His Music And Black Culture
Tech N9ne’s brand of music has a diverse following. However, the king of independent Hip Hop believes that he needed, and needs, help reaching black fans.
“Even on my new song with T-Pain, the first single we released off Something Else, it’s called ‘B.I.T.C.H.’ Breaking In To Colored Houses,” he said to HipHopDX. “That’s what I needed T-Pain to do. Give me a chorus that’ll help me break into black folk’s house through that TV. They see me on that TV like, ‘Woah, that’s that Tech N9ne dude!’ The first thing I said on that song was, ‘Putting all the facepaint I can put on.’ I’m not changing even on the song where I’m breaking into colored houses. It’s me. I’m breaking into your house like me. Not something that you’re used to—something else.”

Tech N9ne admitted to a disconnect between his music and black culture. “Yeah, a big one. But you got a lot of black folks coming to my show now and saying, ‘Not all us are missing you.’ And I am a lot different than the regular rapper. That artwork? No, not a regular rapper. They say that looks like Rock N’ Roll, Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeath, Alice Cooper shit. I have those influences. I’m not going to change that. I’m not the everyday run-of-the-mill. So just imagine how everyone felt when they saw me on the BET Cypher, ‘That’s the same motherfucker?’ That’s so beautiful to me. You can’t stop it no matter how much you talk shit about it, saying, ‘That’s the devil shit.’ Here I am. I’m going to keep on popping up.”
Scarface Believes “Hip Hop Is White Now”
Scarface had an outspoken week as well, as the legendary Southern rapper explained his believe that Hip Hop is no longer in the hands of the communities that started it.
“I feel like we losing it,” said Face. “I feel like the people that are in control of what Hip Hop does is so fucking White and so fucking Jewish and so they don’t give a fuck about what the culture and the craft really is about.”

Uncle Face continued, providing no qualifications for his inflammatory words. “Let me say this shit right because I want this to be as offensive as I can fuckin’ make it for these old-ass punks that’s running these record labels that’s in the powerful positions to dictate what the Black community hears and listens to. I fucking hate that shit. That shit pisses me off,” he said.
Scarface explained that the lack of diversity in the decision-making positions at labels is not an accident. “There’s no fucking way that you can tell me that it’s not a conspiracy against the Blacks in Hip Hop. You put out fucking records that make us look stupid. You make us look dumb. You brainwash a generation of Hip Hoppers with this fucking crud and then when these other rappers come out, splitting it down the middle, these other rappers’ shit sound like ‘Wow!’ Y’all look great!’ ‘Y’all look stupid!’ … Then mothafuckers start going over here and pretty soon, Hip Hop is White now.”

“So, it’s like I separate Gucci the artist from Gucci the person. Gucci the person is a sweet, loving, carefree, funny, hardworking dude. And so I never really paid attention to anything he said,” Nicki explained. “In terms of intervention, I think about how talented he is and I kind of wish there was somebody that could step in and say ‘Gucci, if you only knew how special you were. You would take a moment to really just get centered.’ I just think he really needs to center himself and not to point fingers because I’ve had moments when I needed to center myself. Sometimes you just need to be alone in a meditating type of place and to just kinda block out all the other noise.”
