While out in New York, Pitchfork.tv caught up with Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’s MellowHype to discuss their upcoming album Numbers. During the interview, the duo discussed their place within the OFWGKTA empire. Rapper Hodgy Beats explained that MellowHype stands alone from the rest of the Golf Wang, and that Numbers will show where their music differs from the other members’ tunes.
“It’s just me and Left, really, nobody else” Hodgy said. “He makes a beat or I make a beat and we collab on it. We’re not that much of a group like niggas be thinking. Odd Future, MellowHype, we have our own styles and our own goals, but within those goals we work together. When Numbers drops, our album, we’ll definitely show our side. We’re just good at what the fuck we do…we’re trying to give niggas fire.”
The duo also discussed listeners’ response to their latest single “La Bonita” and listeners’ reaction to the cut. They said that a lot of listeners have accused them of selling out with the song or attempting to emulate Pharrell. In reality, however, Hodgy and Left Brain the original beat dates back from close to four years ago, and that there was no thought rehashing Skateboard P’s trademark sounds while making it.
A lot of people say that ‘La Bonita’ is MellowHype or Odd Future selling out – you know, whatever the fuck,” he said. “[Left Brain] made this beat when I was in 11th grade, for one, number one. Number two, nigga we just go in. It was a whole different style; a lot of people said, ‘Oh, it’s sounds like this, it sounds like that, it reminds me of that’ – yes, that’s what it does, it reminds of it. It don’t sound like none of that shit.”

Left Brain added, “I don’t really try to influence my shit on other shit. I don’t want to bring back that old Jay-Z, Hip Hop album shit, or I don’t wanna make the perfect album like Pharrell or some shit; I just fuckin’ do my own thing. I’m influenced by the MellowHype life.”
