During his time at Uptown/MCA Records, Michael “Blue” Williams helped play a part in Jodeci’s career, and he would later serve as a manager for K-Ci & Jo-Jo. Naturally, during the Uptown years, Williams crossed paths with Heavy D, and he says he was always impressed with the rapper’s talent and warmth. As Heavy D transitioned more into acting and business, Williams saw his stock rise as a one-time manager for the group Outkast and a dozen other high profile clients in the Hip Hop and R&B world. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Williams revealed there was a reason Heavy D became more visible in the months before and after his appearance at this year’s “BET Hip Hop Awards.”
“A lot of people don’t know Hev took his time off so he could be there to raise his daughter,” Williams explained. “His recent movement around was him getting back into the game, and he was really enjoying himself. To have him pass away so suddenly was really a shock, and Hip Hop has lost a great ambassador.”
Williams added that Heavy D approached him within the last several months to inquire about a managerial partnership. Due to his iconic status, Williams says he was reluctant to take the manager position, but glad to help in any capacity.
