With a long history of mergers and acquisitions, MCA (Music Company of America) will soon be nothing but a memory. Despite swallowing Rawkus Records and their roster (Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, Skillz, Hi-Tek) and housing talents such as The Roots, Common, Blackalicious and Mary J. Blidge, MCA feels they no longer have a reputable name to sell records.
The nail in the coffin came this January when President Jay Boberg left after eight years at the helm. At the time of his departure, he cited the declining sales of label as his reason for leaving. Currently, there is speculation that both Geffen and Interscope are looking to swallow up the label.
Both labels are a part of Universal and would obtain the rights to the contracts of the MCA artists. That does not mean they will however, as they can pick and choose which contracts they wish to keep.
