Unbroken, unscratched and unfazed after his February 27 car accident, Keith Murray strolled into Mirror Image Studios on Monday night, carrying a disc filled with tracks from his highly anticipated April 29 release, “He’s Keith Murray.” Passing out pounds to the small group of press, Keith ushered everyone into his lab, the studio. “I’m only going to play a few joints,” he declared. And then, in what can only be compared to “the greatest show on earth,” Murray began to jump, dance and mime the lyrics to his songs, while he fiddled with the knobs on the mixing board and pressed stop and start on the disc player.
Maybe Murray was a comedian in his past life. Or will be one in his next life, because he’s funny. Funny like Jim Carey when he loses control. The way Keith glances sideways while speaking and emphasizes certain phrases is pretty comical. After playing his second single, “Candy Bar,” which is the room’s favorite, Murray bumps what the label might release as the third single, the Erick Sermon-produced “Child Of The Streets.” Next is “Christina,” a slow joint about his sister who died on February 27, 1998—his car accident happened on February 27, 2003—at the age of 15 from complications with AIDS, which his mother, who was an intravenous drug user, had passed on to her.
