No, Griffin’s not signed to Tha Row. But Suge Knight did executive produce the soundtrack to Eddie Griffin’s concert flick, DysFunKtional Family, a Miramax production due out April 4. The CD drops April 8 and features Tha Row artists Crooked I, Eastwood, Danny Boy, Kurupt, Michel’le, Nina a.k.a. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, plus Jay-Z on “Hovy Baby,” Ja Rule, Ashanti, Juvenile and the Dramatics. Griffin is also featured on “Thought U Knew” (rapping) and “Dys-funk-tional” (singing). He’s not bad. Plus, as if any Row compilation could be complete without him, there’s a remix of a Tupac Shakur track.
After performing Friday night in front of a packed crowd of mostly press at the Comedy Cellar in the West Village (NYC), Griffin met with journalists the next morning. When asked how he hooked up with Death Row for the soundtrack, Griffin explained that he had a longstanding relationship with Suge. “He asked me to be on Death Row,” Griffin revealed. “But that name means for life. Couldn’t it be parole records or something?” He shared how Suge, Dre and Pac used to frequent the comedy club he performed at in Los Angeles. “One time, Dre went on stage and broke the DJ’s record because he didn’t like it. Another time, Tupac started a fight. I was on stage with bright lights in my eyes and I heard a lot of stomping. I thought the crowd liked my joke. Then someone jumped on me and told me to get down, people were fighting.”
