Since its inception, rappers have used Twitter for everything from starting and stopping viral beefs to an informal promotional tool. For Virginia’s Audra the Rapper, the social networking site gave her career a mainstream boost.

“In mid ’09 [towards] the beginning of the summer, I was up at the radio station just showing love to one of the personalities,” Audra explained to 3 Little Digs. “[Rick] Ross came in for an interview, and that just happened to be the day he signed up for Twitter.”

After an impromptu rhyming session outside the station, Audra and Ross exchanged Twitter information. Despite some unanswered messages, Ross told Audra he was still a fan. But the pair would not have another face-to-face meeting until months later, when they were booked to perform at the same show. By then, Audra had already released her mixtape, The Miseducation of Audra, which featured her version of Ross’ summer hit, “Blowin’ Money Fast.” Apparently, the tape made an impression.

“I get a call from Ross like, ‘Yo I checked out your tape. I fuck with you; I wanna work with you. It could be so much more…I see a vision.’ The next day I had flight information, and I was down in the studio in Miami.”
