After getting some critical praise at the Sundance Film Festival and later not being supported by Q-Tip, Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. As far back as 2008, both Rapaport and Nas were linked to the project. However after the documentary was debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Q-Tip announced via Twitter that he was not in support of the documentary, which lists him a co-producer.
Fellow group members Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad endorsed the project, although Phife said he was initially apprehensive.
Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest serves as Rapaport’s directorial film debut. In addition to acting roles in dozens of films, he also directed at least one episode of the Fox drama “Boston Public.” It is currently unclear if Sony’s acquisition of Beats, Rhymes and Life will lead to a theatrical or straight to video release.
