Last night, the Black Eyed Peas performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. The veteran Hip Hop-turned-Pop group played catalog hits like “I Gotta Feeling,” “Boom Boom Pow” and “Where Is The Love,” in addition to covers of hits by Guns N’ Roses and Billy Medley & Jennifer Warnes. While the Peas had one of their biggest audiences to date, the Interscope Records act did not charge to perform.

Forbes’ Zack O’Malley Greenburg reports that despite mid-six-figure performance fees, the multi-platinum group performed free of charge last night. The article reveals an analysists’ explanation as to why the top-earning performers (and halftime shows of yesteryear) benefit from the appearance.
