The “Godlovesugly” tour came through Toronto last night and I had the pleasure of catching the show. Despite it being their 52nd show in last two months, Slug, Blueprint and Brother Ali performed like it was their first. Brother Ali, who has not yet released his debut, was relatively unknown to the crowd. That didn’t keep him from winning them over. He ripped his set, displaying incredible talent the whole way. He kicked ill rhymes with multiple flows, beatboxed and freestyled. Ali will be dropping his debut album, “Shadows On The Sun,” in the spring of 2003. The 15 song album was produced entirely by Atmosphere’s Ant.
Slug and Blueprint headlined with Blueprint acting as the hype man for the most part. He did all his songs from the Soul Position EP in between Slug’s songs. I can tell you this, you will not see a better show than the one that Slug puts on. Far and away the best show that I have ever seen. The man left his soul on the stage. I also had an incredible interview with him before the show, be on the look-out for another solo album from him, “Se7en’s Travels,” within the next few months. The next Atmosphere album should be out this time next year, he and Ant started working on it after “Godlovesugly” was released.
Other upcoming releases from Rhymesayers will be Musab (formerly Beyond) with “Respect The life.” That is out on this coming Tuesday. The heavily anticipated Soul Position LP, “8 Million Stories,” will be out this spring.
