Joslyn Rose Lyon’s award winning 2006 film Soundz of Spirit will be getting the director’s cut treatment this coming fall. The film explores the link between Hip Hop music and spirituality, with the director’s cut featuring extended interviews and behind the scenes footage with a number of featured artists including Andre 3000, Talib Kweli, the Last Poets, KRS-One, Nappy Roots and many more.
Upon its initial release in 2006 at the HBO Urban World Film Festival, Soundz of Spirit was heralded by magazines like The Source and went on to win the title of Best Music Documentary at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. The director’s cut will be available on DVD this September 28 exclusively at the film’s website.
In other news, Pigeon John is preparing the release of his fifth solo LP Dragon Slayer for an October 12 release on Quannum Projects. This latest album will prove a departure from his previous works, as John has enlisted General Elektriks’ Hervé Salters to handle the production as opposed to sampling.
“I’m enjoying the new record because of Hervé’s touch on it,” he explained. “The songs ran out of my hands and grew up like children. Control went out the window, and the songs stood on their own two feet without my help. Dragon Slayer is the best TV pilot ever written. That’s all I have to say, plus give me a pint.”

Finally, 3AFilms and SOLMG are presenting Video City’s “Strickly For the Fans!” showcase this September 18. Unlike many showcases, “Strictly For the Fans!” will give budding artists the chance to perform in front of a live, sold out audience without the nerve-wracking hassle of competition or judges, and will be aired throughout the five boroughs of New York on Video City.
The flyer for the event can be seen below. For more information, contact (646) 820-8143 or stricklyforthefans@gmail.com.
