Peace everyone. This is my first attempt at writing hip hop column. I don’t know what kind of structure this will take on; I do have some ideas I want to try, so bare with me. I’ll attempt to write about things that other hip hop enthusiasts think about and hopefully a few things that nobody thinks about. Anyway, let me give Noyz a shout for give me space to voice my ideas and thoughts. His site is my first stop when looking for new dope music. Hopefully I can add to the new dope articles on it as well.
We all have a little person inside our head that holds a sheet of paper that list a set of credentials as to what makes good hip hop. I’m sure that you have all got into discussions with the neighborhood know-it-all and maybe even fist fights about which rapper spits the best, the best MC, who represents hip hop to the fullest, who’s keeping it real, blah blah fucking blah. But rather that tell you who is the very best in hip hop right now (I really know) I’d like to discuss what makes a good lyricist.
There are as many different kinds of lyricists as there are kinds of flowers or condoms. Though I’m not a fan of categorizing and pigeonholing, I will for the sake of giving a basis for further analysis. This editorial is probably 98.6% opinion, also contains countless hours of scientific research. It is the sum total of 13 years of listening to hip hop and studying performers comprised into a 60 minute write-up. Enough shenanigans on with it already
