Malaysian rapper Yogi B, also referred to as the “Godfather of Tamil Hip Hop”, celebrated the 16th anniversary of his breakout album, Vallavan, yesterday (September 1). In an Instagram post, the rapper shared that September 1st was “The day my life and what I’d like to think as the way we listened to Tamil music changed. Vallavan [was] released 16 years ago today. Eternally grateful for all the love, support and reverence we continue to receive.”
In 2020, the rapper re-released the music video for “Madai Thiranthru”, which was previously unavailable on official platforms online. The track was an immense success in 2006, and is described to have impacted the Tamil diaspora in Malaysia, India, and Tamil communities all over the world. Despite being a re-release, the official music video has garnered over 12 million views in the past two years.
Yogi B also announced yesterday that he will be reuniting with Dr. Burns and Emcee Jesz, who are collectively known as Yogi B and Natchatra, at the Return of the Legends concert on November 26. This is the group’s first stage performance in 13 years. Tickets for the event go live today (September 2).
