Similar to the hashtag, the almighty meme has forever changed the way we interact on social media and even the way we consume Hip Hop stories.
Which is why our trusty All Eyez on Memes series is an essential part of today’s complete digital breakfast.
Many props to the laughs we got from Everyday Struggle vs. Migos, the “Redbone Remix” and more, but those featured below were the best memes of 2017 for the Hip Hop community.
5. Big Shaq’s “The Ting Goes”
Primary Use: To make that ting go skrrra pap pap ka ka ka, tun tun poom poom, of course!
AD LOADING...
Origin: U.K. comedian/rapper Michael Dapaah a.k.a. Big Shaq’s “Fire in the Booth” BBC Freestyle.
Circa September 2017, Big Shaq was spitting that hot Dylan fiyah for 1Xtra when the internet got a hold of it and created a new personification for their cooking techniques. Thank him eternally.
4. Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
Primary Use: To look just as scrupulously as Kendrick did on his latest greatest.
AD LOADING...
Origin: Coincided with Kung Fu Kenny’s fourth studio album cover reveal.
Much like Straight Outta Compton’s memes did for another kid from CPT, Kendrick endured a chuckle at the Internet’s expense to get the last laugh, as the album went double platinum in a little over three months, spawned his first Billboard No. 1 single and potentially his first Grammy Album of the Year Award.
3. Terrence Howard Mayne
Primary Use: Simply to clown the King of Empire.
AD LOADING...
Origin: What started out as a simple request turned into an Internet extravaganza.
When Chicago Bears podcast “79th And Halas” co-host Flows Andolini asked to see Howard photoshopped as a Star Wars Jedi Knight, the internet did him one better and photoshopped Howard doing everything within pop culture’s grasp. It even got a hilarious reaction from the man himself.
2. White Guy Blinking
Primary Use: For those hard-to-believe, WTF moments.
AD LOADING...
Origin: GiantBomb video editor Drew Scanlon had that natural reaction during one of his company’s weekly videos and the rest, they say, is history.
It’s a given people will say dumb things on the internet. And this instant classic double-take will forever serve as the perfect response.
1. Roll Safe
Primary Use: Pointing out the obvious even when it’s obviously tongue-in-cheek.
AD LOADING...
Origin: A BBC YouTube series titled Hood Documentary featured actor Kayode Ewumi portraying the character of “Roll Safe.”
For everyday Americans, the short clip wasn’t much to write home about but the screenshot of Roll Safe pointing to his thinking cap? Twenty four karat magic in the airrrrr … and the possibilities (are still) limitless.
