The true story of Boston-based organized crime leader Whitey Bulger, Scott Cooper’s slickly directed film Black Mass has already captivated critics and is set for a pretty solid opening weekend at the box office. Stepping into the shoes of Bulger is Golden Globe winner Johnny Depp, best known for iconic roles ranging from Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates Of The Caribbean. Those with an understanding of Black Mass’ lead know of the 16 years the former FBI informant spent at large before being caught in Southern California. Hip Hop has had plenty of emcees having significant run-ins with the law. However, some have tried to evade capture despite their celebrity or high profile nature. Maybe the culture’s rebellion against the majority makes that inevitable. Regardless, here are rappers who tried to avoid the law.
Lil Twist
When he isn’t riding the bench of YMCMB, Lil Twist (real name Christopher Moore) is clearly about that action. Last year in mid-November, the Texas-native was slapped with a felony arrest warrant for beating and robbing Nickelodeon star Chris Massey. A staggering six charges including making criminal threats, burglary, grand theft, battery and 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon were given to Twist in late March. Here’s assuming things have been cleared up as Twist is still relatively active on social media.
Crunchy Black
Three 6 Mafia member Crunchy Black has always been seen as the most unhinged character of Memphis’s groundbreaking collective. Real name Darnell Carlton, Oscar winner and Hip Hop’s most famous G-Walker found himself charged with two counts of domestic assault along with another for drug possession in Minnesota. Skipping his court date for the charges, he was later caught in Las Vegas walking crossing the street as a “do not cross” sign flashed.
Young Thug
Thugger has been this year’s most controversial artists without a doubt. From his questionable fashion choices to everything revolving around the Barter 6, the Atlanta rapper continues to make news for better or worse. In July, an arrest warrant was placed on the “Stoner” artist after he threatened a security guard while being escorted from Perimeter Mall. In addition to making “terroristic threats,” Young Thug was charged with cocaine possession, marijuana possession and three counts of felony gun possession after a raid of his Sandy Springs home days later.
Kidd Kidd
G-Unit artist Kidd Kidd was arrested by undercover cops over the summer in New York before his performance celebrating this year’s XXL Freshman cover which featured him. The charges stemmed from domestic violence charges he faced in New Orleans after assaulting and strangling a woman. He later posted his $105,000 bond was ordered to turn himself in to NOPD by a New York judge.
Lil Reese
2013 wasn’t a good year for Chicago rapper Lil Reese after a warrant was issued in relation to charges of criminal trespassing and video which allegedly showed him assaulting a woman. Real name Tavares Taylor, he was arrested after being found sleeping in a vehicle and was held on $100,000 bond before being released. Despite making his breakout verse on Chief Keef’s “Don’t Like,” he’s yet to fully recover career wise.
Ol’ Dirty Bastard
Wu-Tang’s wildest member Ol’ Dirty Bastard will forever be remembered as one of Hip Hop’s most troubled artists before his untimely death in 2004. Having multiple run-ins with the law, ODB spent a month on the run from authorities after escaping a court-mandated drug treatment facility. Mr. Russell Jones was eventually caught outside of a Philadelphia McDonald’s after authorities caught him signing autographs for fans.
Joe Budden
Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden has had a few run-ins with the law. In 2014, the former Love & Hip Hop star was wanted for robbery after taking a cellphone of a 25-year old woman. The New York Police Department’s verified Twitter account even posted a tweet using a previous mug-shot of Budden before he turned himself in.
Ras Kass
Before eventually cleaning up his act, Watts’ own Rass Kass had several issues with drinking and driving. In 2003, John Austin IV was on the run for months before being apprehended in Las Vegas. He ended up serving 19 months in prison.
DMX
DMX’s history with law enforcement has been historic at this point. Failing to appear in court for drug possession, identity theft and animal cruelty, he fled to Miami from Arizona. Not only was his bond raised to $120,000, Maricopa, Arizona County Sheriff Joe Arpaio also added a $5,000 award for any information leading to his capture. He was eventually apprehended by FBI agents.
Tim Dog
Probably the strangest story on the list, Ultramagnetic MC’s affiliate Tim Dog was the subject of a grand larceny investigation in 2013. Around that time, various news reports cited the emcee as passing away in Atlanta due to a diabetic seizure. In a bizarre turn of events, an arrest warrant was placed on Tim Dog after a woman claimed he was still alive. His death would officially be confirmed the following year.
