(Sample: Lou Donaldson “Pot Belly”)
Tribe gets a nod here for getting this one out there first, even though it was just on 12″ b-side. ’91 was obviously a big year for Lou’s sample, Cube and the Boogiemen has the most unique of the bunch, but not the best in my opinion. Main Source’s is easily the best here overall, with Extra P’s beat being extra crispy and the song itself being one of the all-time best tackling police brutality. CMW’s track, awesome title aside, is really sinister and would be my next choice. Tim Dog takes the L here, not because he was the last one to the party, or because “Timberlands” has one of the most unintentionally hilarious choruses, but he just didn’t flip it quite as nice. Not to mention, he also sampled “Pot Belly” on the preceding song “I Get Wrecked.”
I’m going to start doing “Who Sampled It Wrong” every week as part of our Throwback Thursdays, so be on the folks.
