Pasadena, CA – The 48th NAACP Image Awards took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Saturday, (February 11), and was broadcasted live on TV ONE as a two-hour special. HipHopDX had the pleasure of covering the red carpet prior to the show, which saw the likes of many stars such as the cast of Black-ish and Empire, and even Xzibit showed up.

The #ImageAwards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film, and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.

In an exclusive interview with Lil Mama, the rapper speaks on her upcoming role in the film called Hit A Lick.

“It’s about a young 16-year-old girl, who grows up in the fast lane and becomes pregnant,” Lil Mama explains. “She becomes a stripper and attracts the eyes of a pimp. The story spirals off from there.”

Lil Mama, who previously played Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the 2013 TLC biopic CrazySexyCool, is the star of the film, which tells the heartrending story of Falicia Blakely.  The movie serves as TV One’s first original movie. DX asked how the acting was coming along, to which she replied, “It’s amazing. I love it. I’m a true thespian and looking to grow. I’m just excited to show my. . . my gift, my talent.”

In regards to her music, she says, “When there’s something new, I’ll share. We’re still trying to figure it out.”

In addition to promoting her movie, the entertainer born Niatia Kirkland was there to celebrate black excellence. Look out for Hit A Lick, slated to be released later this year.
